As a dad, I needed a doula too!

It was my wife's idea to have a doula, but as it turned out having a doula served me well too. We wanted to avoid unnecessary medical interventions, and so I felt Ashley would help me communicate our birth wishes to the medical staff. I felt reassured by the thought of having the support of someone who knew the medical system better than I do. As it turned out our doctors and nurses were very supportive of our birth wishes and before Ashley arrived at the hospital I did not really know what to do. Ashley's presence changed the way I experienced our son's birth. She made me an active participant rather than just a spectator or a medical advocate. I did not just watch my wife deliver our son. She showed me how to massage my wife's back, apply cold and hot compresses, and serve as a crutch through contractions. It was physically very demanding! While my wife was in labor I was sweating. Shortly after Ashley arrived in the room, I have the distinct memory of feeling too warm and having to take off my sweater. The day after I was sore and happy to have had the opportunity to have been more than just a medical advocate but an active participant in my wife's labor in a way I could never have imagined.

Her compassionate support was exactly what we needed

I am grateful to Ashley for the experience she brings to the table, as well as her scientific mind (since her previous career is as a field biologist!). I am a Bradley Method childbirth educator, which means that I teach the "husband-coached childbirth" method of natural childbirth.  It never felt like Ashley tried to take the place of my husband as my "coach" but rather that she took great pains to make herself nearly invisible in our process. She supported my husband so that he could focus on me and my needs.

Ashley is incredibly knowledgeable and an extremely empathetic person, which makes her the ideal doula for my husband and myself.  We weren't looking for a "hippy dippy" experience, but instead wanted to have someone to support us in our educated decisions for the birth of our second child.

My husband appreciated the knowledge and support that Ashley provided.  He leaned on her to know if we had waited too late to travel to our birth place, as well as to provide him (and me!) with ideas of how to augment the labor naturally, to know if we were truly in labor, etc.

Ashley's compassionate support was exactly what we needed.  With my previous birth, we felt bullied and coerced into several of the decisions we made.  Ashley listened to our experience, helped us both to process our fears, and then encouraged us in the choices that we were making for this second birth.  She was aware of my fear of being pressured into interventions, and was aware of my husband's fear of a precipitous birth.  Her calm presence was exactly what we both needed in order to feel supported and able to do what we needed to do for this birth: when I was anxious and believed that my labor had stalled, Ashley reassured me with her words and her actions.  When my husband was nervous that we wouldn't make it to our birth place in time for the birth, Ashley kept him calm as well.

I knew within minutes she was exactly what I was looking for

Our family's experience with Ashley was everything we hoped it could be. At the initial interview I knew within minutes she was exactly what I was looking for. She made me feel loved, cared for, like we had already been friends for years. The months leading up to the delivery of my baby number two she continued to support me through calls, texts, emails, visits to my home & long lunches where we had the best informative and uplifting conversations. From the time I went into labor up until after the birth, Ashley was with me for 30+ hours to do everything she could to support me and help me in anyway needed. This woman even got in the hospital bed with me to help comfort me. She was like family to me & I never once regretted asking her to be a part of this birth. Thank goodness for that because she helped me achieve the VBAC I physically, mentally & emotionally longed for, and our family will forever be grateful.

Private childbirth class customized for us in our home

My husband and I really wanted to take a childbirth class before the birth of our first baby, but because he travels for work, and with the limited local class offerings, we were afraid it just wouldn't fit in our schedule. Luckily, I found the Strong Mama website during a late night Google session and contacted Ashley about scheduling a private class ASAP since I was already 8 months along. She responded first thing the next morning and quickly arranged her schedule to be able to teach us 3 days later. I had no idea what to expect and was more taking the class because it was something I thought we "needed" to do rather than expecting to really get much out of it. Boy was I wrong! Ashley was extremely thorough and covered every bit of the pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding process using pictures, diagrams, videos, demonstrations and handouts. I learned SO much and took 12 pages of notes! She catered her session to what I was most concerned about (relaxing during an unmedicated birth) and what my husband wanted to learn most (how to help with pain management both emotionally and physically). We had a ton of questions and Ashley very graciously took her time and answered all of them even though we went over the 3 hour scheduled time. There is nothing off limits during the class and it was very comforting to be in the privacy of our own home where we were free to discuss embarrassing or graphic topics instead of in a room full of strangers! I was confident after our class with Ashley that we were prepared as we possibly could be going into labor. I successfully had an unmedicated delivery and I know without the education and guidance from Ashley's class that would have been impossible! I highly recommend using her services!

She took care of us after our baby was born!

Ashley was both our birth doula and our postpartum doula; we cannot recommend her highly enough in either capacity.

After the birth of our first son nearly six years ago, we learned about doulas, and I always wished we had a doula for our first birth experience. When I became pregnant again, I knew I wanted a different experience and a VBAC; I also knew that a doula could be the key to both.

Ashley spent a lot of time getting to know our family, our concerns, and hopes; while educating us on childbirth. We felt completely comfortable with her.

When my labor started, Ashley was available as we needed her. When my labor slowed, she provided movements and positions to get it back on track. I gave birth to our second son with a vbac. Both my husband and I know that this birth was greatly enhanced by having Ashley as our birth doula. The birth of our second one was completely different than our first; the experience was a thousand times better.

I faced several unexpected challenges postpartum; I was back in the hospital twice more, one of those requiring a four day stay.  So, here we were: an exclusively breast fed, two-week-old infant, a five-and-a-half-year old son (who had not only just become a brother, but who had watched his mommy carried out of the bedroom by EMTs), a father who was missing work, terrified about my health and suddenly a full time caregiver to three people, and me, trying to recover from being sicker than I had ever been. I could barely get out of bed when I returned home, my husband had to go back to work, and our baby had to be taken care of during the night.

We called Ashley. She saved us by becoming our postpartum/night doula. She already knew our family, so having her stay with us for several nights was an easy transition. Ashley came over in the evening as I was nursing our son before bed. I was pumping, and she would give him a bottle the next time he awoke, or bring him to me so I could nurse him and go right back to sleep. We were incredibly grateful that she was available to help us.

Ashley is knowledgeable and is able to pass the information on to her clients in an easy manner. She is professional, but ends up being like family. She is empathetic and truly wants to understand your feelings and family dynamics. I cannot begin to tell you how much she helped and supported our family.

If you are looking for a birth doula? Ashley is your woman! Looking for a postpartum doula? Call Ashley! You'll be more than happy you did.

Just a side note: while I enlisted Ashley as a night/postpartum doula due to medical issues, my brother had one because he and his wife were exhausted. There are many reasons to enlist a postpartum doula!

My husband’s mind was changed!

Ashley attended my second birth, first natural delivery! I am still grateful to her till this day. She was very thorough with the anatomical information which sub consciously helps because it helps you understand why your body feels the way it does, and what really happening. She instilled so much confidence in the warmest way. I didn't expect having a doula would be so wonderful! Not just for me though, my husband who thought I was crazy from the beginning for not going with a medicated birth. He dismissed all of his previous notions once he saw her in action on delivery day! She relived him from so much stress, and kept him involved and made him feel comfortable as well. This was the first time I saw him HAPPILY pay someone! She deserved that and more. I could go into more details but at the end of the day, my birth would not have been as smooth and as beautiful if it wasn't for Ashley! She was AMAZING! I am eternally grateful!

Informs us instead of convincing us

Wonderful!!! My husband and I have met with Ashley on several occasions, attended the 6-week birth class, and were lucky enough to have Ashley aid us during the labor of our daughter last week. Ashley has been an invaluable resource, providing us with literature addressing all of our questions throughout my pregnancy and is clearly interested in educating/informing her clients so that we can make our own decisions as opposed to trying to convince us to adopt/use specific practices.

Ashley has been a constant source of support, and during the actual labor process served as an ideal "voice" that reminded the doctor/nurses of my birth wishes when I would have but was unable to do so. She also "interpreted"/simplified the directions, instructions, and questions so that in the midst of labor I could understand what was being asked of me and could make an informed decision.

My husband and I HIGHLY recommend Ashley as a doula!

Helped me have a VBAC!

I had a wonderful experience with Ashley Lovell as my doula.  I had a csection with my previous pregnancy and really did not want to have a repeat csection.  Ashley supported every desire that I had 110% and provided me with lots of information.  Although we only had time to meet two times before my delivery, since I had premature rupture of membranes at 35 weeks, I felt very comfortable and confident with her.

I fully believe she gave me the courage to VBAC successfully.  She offered different techniques for making my contractions much more tolerable.  She also tried to make my labor as relaxing as possible, which I really wanted and tried to express as one of my desires in one of our meetings.  She had relaxing music playing for me and tried to help me relax mentally, both during and between contractions.  I was given pitocin for induction and she helped me stay moving during early labor to keep everything progressing.

I would definitely recommend the use of a doula for labor and delivery and most especially Ashley!

Hiring her again!

Having Ashley there for the birth of my first child was an incredible experience. She was helpful without being pushy. She was calm and collected and always ready with options to help with each phase of the birthing process. I am so grateful for Ashley and cannot wait to use her for our second child that is due July 2014!

She loves birth and babies!

Ashley is a kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable doula who was an absolute joy to have with me before and during the delivery of my baby. Her understanding of birth provided for excellent training in the weeks leading up to my delivery and I felt very ready to go into labor and deliver. She was very professional in the hospital and respected the views of my husband and I as well as her role in the delivery room. One of my favorite things about Ashley is just how much she loves birth and babies and how much she cares for each and every mom and baby that she works with. The joy she has in her work makes her a great person to go with on this adventure! Her follow-up care after the birth was also amazing. She took such an interest in making sure I was well taken care of long after the baby had arrived. Her knowledge and help in breastfeeding in the weeks following showed to me how much she valued every client and every baby. I would recommend her to anyone in a heartbeat!

Had a positive experience, even though things didn’t go as planned

Ashley was such a blessing! She was extremely knowledgeable and was easy to stay in touch with. She never made me feel dumb for asking any of the ten million questions I asked and if she didn't know the answer she would do a ton of research to find an answer for me. She was incredibly helpful throughout the whole process, not just on the day I gave birth. But she was so helpful on that day that even if she was only there when I gave birth it would have been worth it. If you think it costs too much to hire a doula, THINK AGAIN! The services she provided were priceless. My birth did not go the way I hoped it would, but I came away with a very positive experience because I was able to process everything with Ashley as it was happening. With her help, I was able to be a great self advocate and felt very involved in the decision making process. i tell everyone I know to hire a doula because of my positive experience and for my local friends I would highly recommend Ashley Lovell. I cannot say enough good things about her!

Present from beginning to end

I would highly recommend Ashley. She is very knowledgeable about the birthing process and very supportive in achieving the mother's birth wishes. I never used a doula for my first three deliveries, but had decided to use one for my fourth. I wanted to achieve an all natural delivery and Ashley helped me do that. She helped me through both my pregnancy, delivery, and now my post partum phase.

When certain issues arose during my pregnancy, Ashley researched and provided me with information to be prepared to make informed decisions. She helped my husband and I prepare with exercises to overcome fear about the birthing process and pain through labor. During my active labor, she applied her knowledge of comfort positions which helped reduce my lower back pain during contractions tremendously. During delivery, she continually helped me focus on my breathing and pushing. After delivery, she made sure I was comfortable when the nurses were more concerned with clean up. It was wonderful having someone look after all of my needs! She has also been very helpful during my post partum phase when I got mastitis. She offered suggestions on unplugging a clogged duct based on her own experiences. From the beginning to now, she has been very helpful!

If you are looking for someone who will support you through all of your phases of pregnancy and will provide great insight from her own personal experiences and training, you will not be disappointed with Ashley's services!

A phenomenal doula!

Ashley was an excellent birth supporter -- long before contracting her services she made herself available to meet with us on two separate occasions, first for an initial interview and then to review and discuss our contract for doula services. Her total cost for doula services was very reasonable, and she worked intently to accommodate us although we planned to deliver in Columbus, GA. She connected us with local childbirth education courses and accommodated us when we were no longer in a position to attend due to complications in the pregnancy. Ashley responded promptly to text messages and email inquiries related my concerns and complications throughout my pregnancy.

She provided two prenatal sessions in our home to get to know us as a couple, discuss pain management preferences, comfort measures, breathing techniques, prenatal exercises, child birth/labor crash course and reviewing birth plan considerations. She provided an abundance of resources throughout the pregnancy to include: a birth ball, belly band, belly wrap and tons of electronic resources related to concerns and/or complications that I developed as my pregnancy progressed.

Although she was not scheduled to go on call for us until 2 weeks prior to my due date, she exceeded our expectations after I was induced at 37 weeks on Christmas Eve. Ashley showed up to offer birth support on Christmas Day, one of the dates identified in our contract that she would not be available as she had her in-laws in town for a family celebration. After sacrificing time from her family and providing 12 hours of birth support she arranged for a back-up doula to relieve her for the remainder of my labor and delivery. She called within 48 hours of my delivery to provide breastfeeding tips and support and planned her first postpartum visit at my home the day I was discharged from the hospital. She provided lactation support and connected me with a local lactation specialist and support group at EAMC. Ashley provided tons of electronic resources on breastfeeding and infant weight/growth measures.

At our final postpartum visit we discussed my birth experience in detail and she facilitated a very thorough postpartum assessment in addition to the resources she provided for infant congestion, breast pumping and cloth diapering. In sum, Ashley is a phenomenal doula, she is knowledgeable and passionate about her role as a birth supporter and she is truly committed to serving her clients, even if it involves her sacrificing her own self interest and going beyond the call of duty. She's well known and has tons of resourceful connections, therefore she is highly recommended. I would encourage any expectant mother considering birth support to hire Ashley.
